General Summary:

Design, create, and continuously improve manufacturing processes within the operations group. Support the manufacturing operation with technical expertise and guidance regarding technology, processes, equipment, and continuous improvement. Create, implement, and install new methods and technology to improve the processes and their control. Create and maintain process documentation in order to facilitate a process with safety and quality built-in.  Establish standards for each process, including process steps and process times.  Planning for the implementation of the facilities, equipment, tools, and processes to effectively provide for the long, mid, and short-range plans of Astec.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned, as requested or required.

  • Develops, evaluates, and recommends improvements in manufacturing methods through new processes and modifications, minimizing cost and effectively applying production capabilities.
  • Implements process improvements through time studies, process mapping, value-stream mapping, spaghetti diagram and work load balancing, and through cross-functional team collaboration.
  • Using standard lean tool sets, achieves safety and process improvements, through reductions in cycle-time, rework, scrap, inventory, overtime, space, on-time completions, etc.
  • Works with manufacturing to analyze and plan work force utilization, space requirements, material routing and handling methods, manufacturing processes and methods, machine and tool design applications, workflow and new technology and designs layout of equipment and workspace for maximum efficiency, safety and quality.  Support planning of facility production with quantitative tools such as load tables, or other analysis tools to determine equipment loads, line balance, man/machine requirements, and areas needing improvement.
  • Estimates production times, capacity requirements and related costs to provide information for management decisions and to meet completion dates and technical specifications.
  • Develops proposals, evaluates new development programs and recommends changes in parts specifications, manufacturing processes and production methods and/or objectives to improve quality, productivity, manufacturability and safety as required.
  • Applies statistical methods to estimate future manufacturing requirements and potential.
  • Responsible for the transition of new product introductions from engineering to manufacturing, including capacity analysis, process robustness and process validations.
  • Develops and maintains the manufacturing process work instructions and assembly tooling that are initiated by product design or method improvement changes.
  • Specify new equipment and design required fixtures, jigs and tooling needed to meet production and quality requirements.
  • Prepares and makes presentations to individuals and groups using Microsoft Office applications
  • Researches, organizes, analyzes and maintains records of technical information from a variety of sources.
  • Follows company policies and procedures at all times.
  • Follows proper safety rules and procedures at all times.
  • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial, manufacturing, mechanical engineering or related field required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years related work experience in a manufacturing environment required with a demonstrated understanding of heavy machinery manufacturing processes.
  • Knowledge of LEAN, Kaizen, and continuous improvement methods used in manufacturing processes required.
  • Knowledge of all types of metal-cutting and welding processes required.
  • Knowledge of AutoCad Inventor a plus.
  • Knowledge and understanding of nesting software for material optimization preferred.
  • Must be able to collaborate and facilitate cross functional teams to influence and manage change in a heavy manufacturing, multi-shift work environment
  • Must be able to meet regular attendance requirements

  • Fosters healthy relationship with shop floor team members with a “go and see” attitude toward shop floor issue support
  • Champions “design for manufacturability” opportunities with Product Engineering
  • Proficient with reading and understanding engineering drawing and schematics required
  • Thorough understanding of the policies and practices used in manufacturing
  • Ability to motivate and organize multiple efforts to accomplish goals
  • Understanding and use of ERP System (Oracle or other) regarding work routings, standards, costing, and scheduling
  • Proficiency in MS Office software

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires the ability to travel 5-10%. Position is M-F, but individual must be willing to stay later than scheduled times or some weekend hours during busy times as necessary. Successful candidate must pass drug screen, physical, background check

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to risk of injury in an office environment and occasionally a manufacturing shop plant environment.  Duties include a typical office setting including extensive computer work. 

The employee is occasionally exposed to a manufacturing environment, which includes moving machinery, mobile industrial equipment, overhead cranes, and outdoor temperatures.  The noise level in the shop environment is occasionally very loud.
